Reconstruction and modernization of Street Lighting System in Stara Zagora

Sector
Lighting Infrastructure

Location
Stara Zagora City, Municipality of Stara Zagora

Date of assignment: May, 2025/ Completion date: December, 2025

EL КONTROL has successfully completed a comprehensive project for the modernization of the public lighting system, with the primary goal of enhancing energy efficiency and urban sustainability.

Project Implementation Stages

The project was executed across three key areas:

  1. Replacement of Lighting Fixtures
In the city's central area, nearly 5,000 conventional lighting fixtures were replaced with modern LED luminaires. The new LED lights offer higher energy efficiency, a longer operational lifespan, and reduced environmental impact.
  1. Integration of Renewable Energy
Two photovoltaic power plants, each with a capacity of 29.7 kW, were constructed. Installed on the roof of the Stara Zagora Bus Station and equipped with energy storage batteries, these systems optimize the use of generated solar energy and increase autonomy.
  1. Implementation of an Intelligent Management System
The core of the project is the deployed intelligent monitoring and control system, based on Schneider Electric's Power Monitoring Expert 2024 software.
    • Over 250 control panels are installed throughout the city, equipped with programmable controllers, 4G routers, three-phase power meters, and switching equipment.
    • Data is transmitted in real-time to a central server with a visual interface, providing a complete overview of the system's status.

Capabilities of the Management System
The intelligent platform provides advanced functionalities for effective control:

  • Real-time monitoring of all electrical parameters.
  • Automatic detection of faulty lighting fixtures down to specific branches, enabling faster maintenance.
  • Diagnosis of unauthorized connections of external consumers to the grid.
  • Generation of detailed analytical reports on energy consumption and efficiency.
  • An alarm system for immediate notification of incidents.

Final Results and Added Value
The completion of this project delivers key benefits for the city and its residents:

  • Increased Energy Efficiency: Achieved 30% savings on the electricity required for public lighting.
  • Green Energy: The system operates using low-carbon electricity supplied by the installed photovoltaic plants.
  • Modern & Intelligent Management: An automated system that ensures reliability, security, and optimal resource utilization.

This project represents a strategic investment in the future of Stara Zagora, transforming the city's infrastructure through smart technology and sustainable practices.

The project was funded with European resources under the "Support for Energy-Efficient Street Lighting Systems" procedure, approved by the Ministry of Energy under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan
